Stolen and Wrecked, not Fun

Spent the weekend in North Hollywood with our daughter. Other Half spent the weekend in San Diego with Rigby, our mutt. Love spending time with daughter. She works second shift, so while she’s at work I do the “Mom” thing. The Mom thing consists of groceries, laundry and cleaning. In that order.

Groceries first, for obvious reasons, but also because laundry requires quarters. Ralph’s checkout (aka Kroger’s) is a great place to get quarter rolls. I spent the afternoon doing laundry and cleaning with my little buddy Beasly by my side.

IMG_1512Beasly is her dog. He’s a rescue and is supposed to be a Cockapoo. He looks mostly Cocker with an elongated torso. Basically his rear end is in a different zip code, but he’s super cute. He’s the perfect dog for daughter, affectionate and cuddly but also fiercely protective. Considering her recent car theft, protective is a good thing.

Her bright orange Chevy Sonic got stolen just before Thanksgiving. She’s been driving a rental car ever since. Thank goodness for full coverage insurance.

Our goal while I was in North Hollywood (besides the usual Mom thing) was to find her a replacement car. Car buying is generally NOT in my repertoire. Other Half has a long history in that department — as my friends at the credit union can attest. He does his research and actually enjoys the process. I’m not a fan.

IMG_1532With an hour drive to work, daughter had decided she wanted a hybrid. She happens to live near a gigantic Toyota dealership. The three of us, she and I and her Dad (in ‘real time” using technology) worked out a deal on a Certified Pre-Owned Prius C. It took the better part of Sunday, but she left happy.

And then a few days later — her stolen car was recovered — wrecked. It had been crashed and abandoned about 50 miles south of North Hollywood. Her car was in an impound lot for almost a week before she got notified. Not exactly timely.

IMG_1550Thursday, Other Half drove up from San Diego and met her at the impound lot. It was important for her to see her car. The front end is demolished and both driver’s side air bags are deployed. The only thing of hers still in the car was her yoga mat. Guess the car thieves weren’t much into yoga.

Having a car stolen is obviously a new experience for all of us. It’s been an exercise in anxiety and stress. It doesn’t help to lose sleep and funk over something you have absolutely no control over. Wise words straight out of the easier said than done category.
