Saddle Up

IMG_0018_2We finally enjoyed our first “touristy” activity since we started our Big Adventure – horseback riding. It’s been a decade or so since any of us have saddled up. During that decade I’ve learned that one of my major allergens, second only to cats, is horse hair. Annoying.

Daughter planned our outing. She chose a two hour ride through the desert. We agreed. Hmmm, two hours in a hard saddle. That sounds like fun. Other Half was happy to have a chance to show off his cowboy boots.

We got to the stables, signed the “hold no one responsible” paperwork and saddled up. Well not exactly. Daughter saddled up with no problem. Other Half did ok. I needed a serious boost. But then again my horse WAS the tallest.

Our guide through the desert was Josh. Josh was great. He told us about the terrain, the critters, and the difference between a cowboy and a wrangler. Josh is a wrangler.  A cowboy makes his living on his horse and works with cows. A wrangler makes his living on his horse but no cows. Who knew?

IMG_0011At about the hour point of our ride we came upon an oasis in the desert. Water, palm trees, shade and sore keesters. An hour in a saddle takes its toll on the uninitiated rear end. The ride was last weekend. We’re still walking funny, but it was worth it.
