Heading to Red Bay, an Alabama Hot Spot

We left our summer home, Deluxe Trailer Park in Walbridge, Ohio on Tuesday, November 10th. It was a gray drizzly day. Getting back on the road was bittersweet. We’re excited to get going again, but leaving family and friends, after five months and all that’s happened had me teared up.

We spent the night at a Cracker Barrel on the Kentucky Tennessee border. It was my first time sleeping at a Cracker Barrel. I have to say, rolling out of bed within steps of warm biscuits and hot coffee was not bad.

IMG_0261Our destination – Red Bay Alabama. I’m doubting that Red Bay makes many bucket lists. The nearest movie theater is 30 miles away and the town is dry. Lots to do – not. But if you’re the owner of a Tiffin Motorhome, this place is a hot spot.

The Big Rig is an Allegro Bus. Tiffin Motorhomes makes the Allegro Bus. And they make them in Red Bay. The good news about Tiffin is not only do they make motorhomes, they stand behind them. That’s why we’re here, along with 90 or so of our new best friends.

Like everyone here, we showed up with a hit list. Thirteen items that needed attention. None of our items are major – just annoying. Other Half took care of the big stuff, a water leak and crapped out air conditioners, on his two previous trips. This is my first trip.

The system here is first come first serve. This applies to campsites and service. We got the last available site. The way it works for service is you check in with Wanda. She gives you a rough idea of how long you can expect to hang out in Red Bay. Our rough idea is a week or so. From here on it’s about patience.

IMG_0252We got here on Wednesday afternoon. Friday morning we got lucky and got called to Service Bay 32. We were put in an Express Bay. That means you get 2 mechanics for 3-4 hours. The mechanics crank out whatever they can in that time frame. Our mechanics were champs. They blitzed through the list with Other Half watching there every move. Rigby and I hung out in the dog-friendly waiting area.

What’s left is a tail light that was out of stock – expect it to show up Monday. We also have a potential air bag issue that will get checked out early next week. Looks like our time in Red Bay could exceed a week. No complaints. The people here exude Southern hospitality. It’s not so bad to have forced down time on your hands. We’re good.
