Have you ever slept at Walmart?

We left our prime real estate in the Walmart parking lot at the crack of dawn, 6:45 to be exact. Our “spot” turned out better than expected. When we went to bed the gas station in front of us was hopping and the cattle truck next to us was wafting a serious stench.  When we woke in the morning the gas station was deserted and the cattle truck had been replaced with a fellow RV. All things considered our first night sleeping at Walmart was a success. That’s a sentence I never expected to write.

We got back on 20W and headed out. I continued to look for Black Bear until we crossed the Louisiana state line into Texas. No bear. But we did see a coyote or maybe a scrawny dog. We’re not sure. We spotted it walking toward road kill on the grassy median.

We also saw numerous Fire Ant mounds. Not fun. It made walking the dog at rest areas and travel plazas a challenge. I wasn’t sure what the mounds were at first, but I’m smart enough to stay away from anything that looks like a mound. We’ve lived our entire lives in Ohio. Fire Ant mounds are not a thing in Ohio.

As we drove through Texas I amused myself by paying attention to the words that came to mind and then looking for them. Here’s a partial list: Longhorn cattle, BBQ, oil, guns, cowboys, horses, ranches, trucks,  the Bush family and BIG. Texas IS darn big.

We spotted most of the items on the list except the obvious one. They must be in Kennebunkport.

It was a long day.

With all this time on the road we’re getting better acquainted with our RV’s GPS. It’s got a gigantic screen and takes into account our size and weight (the motorhome not us). The goal is to keep our Big Rig out of trouble. So far so good.

We are spending the night at an RV park just east of Abilene Texas.  We traveled 458 miles in decent weather until the last hour. Then we were in driving rain and high wind. The rain finally let up. Outside it’s soggy and muddy. Inside we’re warm and cozy. Life is good.
