Geography Lesson on the Road

IMG_2410We have spent the last six weeks camped in the Palm Springs area. It’s been good but after six weeks we both get antsy. Happy to be on the road again.

We left Thousand Trails about 8:30 am. The goal was to get to the east side of Tucson Arizona. Our route took us past the gigantic Salton Sea along Highway 86 South. According to Wikipedia, the Salton Sea was accidentally created by the engineers of the California Development Company in 1905.  I’m guessing somebody’s butt was on the line for that little snafu. Nevertheless, the Salton Sea is amazing.

The day’s drive took us on 86 South to 111 East to 8 East to Interstate 10 East. On 10 East we were swarmed by bees. It sounded like we were hit by buckshot. We didn’t realize what hit us until Other Half was busily removing bee splat at the Pilot truck stop. Sorry Mother Nature.

We traveled 385 miles on day one. We spent the night at Crazy Horse Campground, not the nicest place we’ve ever stayed, but fine.

IMG_2404Our second day on the road was an all day Interstate 10 day. The scenery was nice and the traffic was light. Good for both of us. Pecan groves are abundant on Interstate 10, at least we’re guessing they were pecans.

At some point we crossed the Continental Divide, at which we firmly established who paid attention in geography class and who didn’t. Other Half patiently explained the Continental Divide to me. I remember learning something about the direction water flows, but at the time I could’ve cared less.

IMG_2415Day two we traveled 430 miles arriving at Mountain View RV Park in Van Horn, Texas. Mountain View is an old school RV park. In its heyday, it even had a stable for your horse, just in case you brought one along.

Day three was another Interstate 1o day spent entirely in Texas. We left Van Horn and drove to San Antonio, 430 miles. We lucked out on the weather for all three days. Nice temps, blue skies and reasonable traffic. We are camped at Travelers World RV Resort in San Antonio. The plan is to spend three nights here, plenty of time to recharge and explore.
