Blue to Beige, Back in the Desert

IMG_2121So long blue. Hello beige.

Our time in San Diego has come to a close. We were at Mission Bay RV Resort for three months. That’s about a month longer than Other Half had planned. Thanks to my clod gene, our plans were derailed.

One of my derailed plans was to ride my bike around Fiesta Island. Fiesta Island is a 3.5 mile bike ride (one way) from our campsite at Mission Bay.The ride around Fiesta Island is 4 miles. If my math skills serve me, that would have been an 11 mile round trip. I realize an 11 mile round trip is no biggie for most bikers – but for me it would’ve marked a big step in my FitBit frenzy.

IMG_1947Since I’ve been unable to ride my bike since December 20th (not that I’m keeping track or anything), Other Half provided the next best thing – a car ride around the island. It was a busy day for seagulls and bikers.

IMG_2070We also took one last trip to the beach. We wanted to say goodbye to the blue Pacific Ocean and also enjoy another round of San Diego’s best fish tacos at the Sandbar Sports Bar & Grill at Mission Beach. We’ll be back.

IMG_2128It felt good to get the Big Rig back on the road even though our road trip wasn’t too long. San Diego to Desert Hot Springs took about 3 hours. Desert Hot Springs is on the windy side of Palm Springs. It’s also very beige. But hey, after three months of blue, beige has its beauty too. And we both appreciate the mountains.

We were in this area last year. It was our first time at a desert campground. Last year I was schooled on what to watch out for in the desert. Nothing happened to scare me last year but this year I got the bageebees scared out of me on our first night here.

Here’s what happened. Taking my dog on her last evening walk, I spotted a 4-legged animal about 50 feet from me on the other side of the gate. My flashlight batteries were failing so I couldn’t tell what it was. It stood there a few minutes then turned and walked away. It could have been a stray dog or a coyote or a wolf or a mountain lion. Granted, a wolf or a mountain lion is unlikely, but it scared me just the same.

You can be sure I don’t walk Rigby without a fully charged flashlight. If there’s something out there I want to see it before it sees me.

IMG_2138We’re staying at Sam’s Family Spa for the next few weeks. It’s a hot spring resort. Our Baby Boomer aches and pains definitely appreciate the hot springs. The sunsets aren’t too bad either.
